Alan Grossman Metuchen, New Jersey Obituary: Former Councilman And current Planning Board Member Alan Grossman Has Passed Away

The community of Metuchen is mourning the loss of Alan Grossman, a longtime public servant, volunteer, and respected community leader whose decades of dedication helped shape the borough he deeply loved.

News of Grossman’s passing this weekend has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance from residents, colleagues, and local organizations who knew him as a compassionate, humble, and unwavering advocate for the Metuchen community. Many described him as “a quiet force” whose kindness, generosity, and commitment to public service touched countless lives over the years.

Alan Grossman devoted much of his life to civic involvement and community improvement. He served two terms on the Borough Council and became one of the longest-serving members of the Metuchen Planning Board. He also contributed his time and leadership to the History Advisory Committee, helping preserve and strengthen the borough’s identity and future.

Beyond municipal government, Grossman remained deeply involved in numerous community organizations. He held leadership positions with the Metuchen Educational Foundation and the Metuchen Borough Improvement League, where he worked tirelessly to support education, civic engagement, and neighborhood development. Friends and colleagues say his work was never motivated by recognition, but by a sincere love for the people and community around him.

Scouting also played a major role in Grossman’s life. An Eagle Scout himself, he spent more than 50 years mentoring young people and serving the scouting community in a variety of leadership positions. Just last week, he received the prestigious Silver Antelope Award, one of Scouting’s highest national honors, recognizing his extraordinary service, leadership, and dedication to others.

Community leaders say the award perfectly reflected the type of man Alan was — selfless, dependable, and committed to helping future generations thrive.

As residents continue mourning his passing, borough officials announced that mourning bunting will be displayed at Borough Hall in his honor, symbolizing the community’s gratitude for a man who gave so much of himself to public service.

Though Alan Grossman’s passing leaves a tremendous void, his legacy of leadership, volunteerism, and kindness will continue to live on throughout Metuchen for years to come.
