The North Country sports world is grieving the loss of longtime Carthage lacrosse coach Kirk Ventiquattro, whose passing after a courageous battle with prostate cancer has left a deep void in the hearts of players, families, and the broader athletic community. Known affectionately as “Coach V,” his influence extended far beyond the field, shaping generations of athletes in Carthage and across the state.

Coach Ventiquattro’s legacy is defined not only by victories, but by decades of leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to his players. During his remarkable career, he built one of the most respected lacrosse programs in New York State, achieving 458 wins, 18 Frontier League championships, 6 Section III titles, and 3 appearances in the New York State championship game. More than 200 of his athletes went on to play at the collegiate level, a testament to both his coaching excellence and his ability to develop talent.

Yet those closest to him say his greatest accomplishments cannot be measured in statistics. Coach V was known for instilling discipline, accountability, resilience, and teamwork in every athlete he guided. He taught his players not just how to compete, but how to carry themselves with pride, integrity, and respect in all aspects of life.

Even while facing a long and public battle with Stage IV prostate cancer diagnosed in 2011, Ventiquattro continued to coach, mentor, and inspire. His strength and determination became a source of motivation for many, as he balanced personal challenges with his commitment to the sport and community he loved.

In a powerful gesture of respect, Carthage players recently honored him by wearing the program’s iconic “knee-high whites” while he was receiving hospice care—an emotional tribute that reflected the deep bond between coach and team.

Many have shared stories of lessons learned under his guidance—lessons that shaped their character and lives long after their playing days ended.

As the community mourns, one truth remains clear: Kirk Ventiquattro’s legacy will forever live on in the Carthage lacrosse program, the athletes he believed in, and the countless lives he touched with his passion, strength, and heart.
